Top 3 Beginner Golf Tips for Women
If you are currently learning how to play golf or trying to get started, you can rest assured, this game is difficult. No one has time to read long lists, or watch 30 minute swing videos. You want some quick advice for the female golf swing. That’s why we put our top 3 golf tips, written by women for women - to help you improve faster, eliminate frustrating problems and enjoy the game more. Next time you hit the range or course, think about how you can apply these tips to help your game!
1. Correct Grip
You can’t swing a golf club effectively without a proper golf grip. Ultimately, the goal of your golf swing is to get the club face (the flat surface of the clubhead) square at impact (when you contact the ball). The direction of your golf shot is largely determined by where your club face points at impact. Your grip is the only link between your entire golf swing and your club face angle.
What about pressure? A good strategy is to imagine you're holding a banana - too much pressure and you’ll have a mushy banana - too light and it will fly out of your hands. A proper grip should feel as if you're holding the golf club mostly in your fingers.
Think there is more to it? You’re right, there is. Check out this video where Coterie coach, Gianna Augustine provides step by step instructions for mastering the proper golf grip.
2. Swinging with your chest
If you have issues feeling comfortable swinging over or under your chest, you’re not alone. It is important to try different techniques to see what works best for you. For example, if you choose to put your arms over your chest you may need to adjust your posture, allowing your arms to clear your chest in both directions.
3. Hit the ground
Don’t be afraid to hit the ground! In fact, learning to make friends with the ground will result in better ball contact. You may have noticed good ball strikers take a divot - a torn up piece of grass that results when you strike the ball and then the ground.
Many new golfers are scared to take a divot! Maybe you're worried you will ruin the grass or hurt yourself. There are lots of benefits to hitting the grass after the ball. Try this quick drill next time you are at the range to improve your confidence. Place a golf tee, roughly an inch in front of your ball. Practice hitting the ball and then the tee in the same swing. This drill should feel smooth because you are emulating taking a divot in the right place.
